Teaching Subject regulations
The University offers teaching qualifications in Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary education.
The Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood) (BTchg(Early Childhood)) programme is a professional teaching qualification that prepares students for work in a variety of early childhood settings with children from birth to five or six years.
The Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) (BTchg(Primary)) programme is a professional teaching qualification designed for students wanting to pursue a teaching career in New Zealand primary, middle, composite and intermediate schools. A Māori Medium option is available – Toitū te Reo
A Graduate Diploma in Teaching (GradDipTchg) is available in all sectors (early childhood, primary and secondary) for students who have completed a bachelors degree and who wish to gain a professional teaching qualification.
A Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (PGDipTchg) is available in the primary and secondary sectors for students who wish to gain a professional teaching qualification at a higher academic level.
Qualified early childhood and primary teachers can upgrade their Diploma of Teaching (DipT) to a BTchg. Professional qualifications are also offered for technology teachers who wish to upgrade their qualifications or for experienced tradespeople who want a career change from tradesperson to teacher.
A Master of Teaching and Learning (MTchgLn) is also available to prepare high achieving graduates for primary and secondary teaching.
Students who began their BTchg (Primary) programme in 2023 or 2024 will complete the prescriptions listed in the Teaching entry of the 2023 and 2024 subject regulations.

BTchg (Early Childhood)[1] To complete the BTchg (Early Childhood), students must take the following papers:
Year 1: TEACH100, TEACH101, TEACH102, TEEDU100, TEEDU101, TEEDU102, TEPRO100 and it is strongly recommended that students choose one of DLRNG100, EDART100, LLTED101, MAOED100, MTHED100 or WRITE100. Students may also consider a programme compatible 15-point paper from another subject area in consultation with an Admissions Advisor. Such alternative options are limited.
Year 2: TEACH200, TEACH201, TEACH202, TEACH203, TEEDU200, TEEDU201, TEPRO200 and 15 points from any subject at 200 level.
Year 3: TEACH300, TEACH301, TEACH302, TEEDU300, TEPRO300 and 30 points from any subject at 200 level or above.
[1] There will be no new intake into the BTchg (Early Childhood) in 2024.

BTchg (Primary) To complete the BTchg (Primary), students must take the following papers:

GradDipTchg (Early Childhood) This is a one year professional qualification consisting of 10 compulsory papers, which includes two professional experience placements.
TEEDU401, TEEDU402 and TEEDU403 are core papers for all students selected for the GradDipTchg programmes.
TEACH400, TEACH401, TEACH402, TEACH403, TEACH404, TEPRO400 and TEPRO401 are only available to students who have been selected for the GradDipTchg (Early Childhood) programme.
