Computing and Mathematical Sciences Prizes for Excellence

The CMS Prizes for Excellence (formerly the FCMS Dean’s Award for Excellence between 2009 and 2019) were established to recognise the best 10 students in each level enrolled in an undergraduate degree in the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences (CMS).

Alan Turing Prize

The Alan Turing Prize is awarded annually to the student who has performed best in a third-year programme of studies which includes at least two Level III courses in Computer Science and at least two Level III course in Mathematics.

John Cleary Prize in Computer Science

The John Cleary Prize in Computer Science is awarded annually to the top student in the paper COMPX301 Design and Analysis of Algorithms.

John Turner Prize

The John Turner Prize is awarded annually to the top student in the BCMS(Hons) 45-point paper Dissertation.

Keith Hopper Prize in Computer Science

The Keith Hopper Prize in Computer Science is awarded annually to the top student in the paper COMPX203 Computer Systems.

Margaret Jefferies Prize in Computer Science

The Margaret Jefferies Prize in Computer Science is awarded annually to the top female student taking second-year Computer Science papers at the University of Waikato in the year of award. Students will be considered for the award on the basis of their grades in their best three Computer Science papers in the year of the award.

Tony McGregor Prize in Computer Science

The Tony McGregor Prize in Computer Science is awarded annually to the top student in the paper COMPX204-Practical Networking and Cyber Security.

Hilbert Prize in Mathematics

The Hilbert Prize in Mathematics is awarded annually to a student who has completed at least 60 points of papers at 300 Level or higher in Mathematics in the year of the award.

John Turner Prize

The John Turner Prize is awarded annually to the top student in the BCMS(Hons) 45-point paper Dissertation.

Euler Prize in Mathematics

The Euler Prize will be awarded annually to the student who has completed two full years of study at the University of Waikato, is majoring in Mathematics, and who is the most outstanding second year student in Mathematics.

Leibniz Prize in Mathematics

The Leibniz Prize will be awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student who has completed at least 60 points of Mathematics papers above 100 level.

Ramanujan Centenary Prize

The Ramanujan Centenary Prize is awarded annually to the top student completing the degree of Bachelor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences with Honours.

The Prize was established in 1987 by Professor E. V. Krishnamurthy in the centenary year of the greatest Indian mathematician – Ramanujan. Ramanujan (1887 1920) was a great Indian mathematical genius gifted with amazing computing powers and intuition. In spite of his utter poverty and lack of formal university education, his single-minded devotion to mathematics raised him to the status of a great twentieth century mathematician and the most romantic figure in the recent history of mathematics.

William & Sylvie Bolstad Bayesian Statistics Prize

The William and Sylvie Bolstad Bayesian Statistics Prize was established in 2014 by William M Bolstad and his wife Sylvie H Bolstad. The Prize will be awarded to the top student enrolled in an undergraduate paper in Bayesian Statistics at the University of Waikato.

Von Neumann Prize in Mathematics

The Von Neumann Prize in Mathematics is awarded annually to a student in their first year of study at the University of Waikato, who is enrolled in at least one course offered by the Department of Mathematics and who is the most outstanding first-year student in Mathematics.

Waikato Graduate Women Educational Trust Emmy Noether Prize in Mathematics

The Emmy Noether Prize is awarded to the best woman student in her first year of study at the University of Waikato enrolled in at least one paper offered by the Department of Mathematics and who is the most outstanding first year woman student in mathematics for the year.

Design Excellence Prizes

The Design Excellence Prizes were established in 2019 to recognise the best students at each of 100, 200, and 300 levels enrolled in the Bachelor of Design (BDes) degree in the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences.
