Many funding opportunities are offered through other organisations, and some of these are listed as external funding opportunities.
We cannot advise what scholarships you can apply for but instead provide a list scholarship opportunities for you to consider. Be sure to check the regulations to find information on your eligibility, possible Scholarship value and more.
Please note, that the University of Waikato does not offer any fully funded scholarships.

Most fee-paying scholarships are paid in two equal instalments across two trimesters of full-time study (very few for multiple years). This will be clearly outlined in your scholarship regulations, which are linked to your scholarship offer in your MyWaikato portal.
If you have not yet completed your enrolment for the next trimester of study, we are unable to load the second payment against your fees. We have processes in place to check for your enrolment status in the 3 weeks prior to, and 2 weeks after, each Trimester intake. If your enrolment falls outside this time, please contact Scholarships when you begin your enrolment, and we will action your payment if you are still eligible for the award.
Our international scholarships are to support international fee-paying students.
Most fee-paying scholarships are paid for each trimester of enrolment.
- For any trimester where you are an international fee-paying student you will retain your scholarship payment.
- For any trimester where you become a domestic fee-paying student you will have that portion of your scholarship removed as soon as we are notified of your change in status.
Scholarships: You can start your studies anytime within the academic year of your scholarship (i.e., the year date in the title of your scholarship regulations) without asking.
If you need to defer beyond one full academic year, you won’t be able to receive your scholarship. Instead, we encourage you to apply again for the scholarship. Note that applications for the Vice Chancellor’s International Excellence scholarships are each month.
Bursaries: If your award has ‘bursary’ in the title then you won’t be able to receive your bursary if you defer your study.
Current scholarship recipients (including current doctoral scholars) can use the Scholarship Variation Request Form to request a variation to their scholarship which is outside of the approved regulations.
To learn more and/or submit a variation request visit the scholarship variation request page.
