If you'd like to work alongside farmers, growers, scientists and other businesses focused on agriculture/horticulture, this subject will equip you with the skills for a dynamic global business career. In an export-based economy such as New Zealand, successful agribusiness relies on the ability to understand competitive global markets, sustainable farm systems and environmental impacts, technological innovations, free trade agreements, international marketing, and managing complex supply chains.

Agribusiness is available as a first major for the Bachelor of Business (BBus) and the Bachelor of Management Studies (Honours) (BMS(Hons))[1]. Agribusiness may also be included as a second major or minor in other undergraduate degrees, subject to the approval of the Division in which the student is enrolled.

To complete Agribusiness as a single major for the BBus, students must gain 135 points from papers listed for Agribusiness, including 105 points above 100 level, and 60 points above 200 level. Students must complete AGBUS101, ECONS101, AGBUS201, AGBUS202, ECONS200, AGBUS304, AGBUS306, AGBUS308 and one of WSAFE396 or WSAFE399.

To complete Agribusiness as part of a double major for the BBus, or other undergraduate degree, students must gain 120 points from papers listed for Agribusiness, including 90 points above 100 level, and 45 points above 200 level. Students must complete AGBUS101, ECONS101, AGBUS201, AGBUS202, ECONS200, AGBUS304, AGBUS306 and AGBUS308.

To complete a minor in Agribusiness students must complete 60 points from the papers listed for Agribusiness, including at least 30 points above 100 level. Students must complete AGBUS101.

NOTES:

[1] There will be no new enrolments into the BMS(Hons) from 2024. Students who commenced a BMS(Hons) in 2023 or prior should contact the Waikato Management School for programme advice.

Prescriptions for:

A Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma are available to graduates who have not included Agribusiness at an advanced level in their first degree. The qualification regulations define the subject requirements for both the Graduate Certificate and [Graduate Diploma] (https://www.waikato.ac.nz/about/calendar/regulations/diplomas/graddip/). There are no specified subject papers that must be completed for these programmes.
The qualification regulations define requirements for the PGCert, PGCertMgmt, PGDip, PGDipMgmt, MMgmt and MBus.
The required subject papers that must be completed for these programmes are below.
PGCert(AgBus) students must complete AGBUS501 and select the remaining 30 points from the AGBUS papers listed for the MBus below.
PGCertMgmt(Agbus) students must complete 45 points from the AGBUS papers listed for the MMgmt below.
PGDip(AgBus) students must complete AGBUS501, and select at least 60 points from the AGBUS papers listed for the MBus below.
PGDipMgmt(Agbus) students must complete 45 points from the AGBUS papers listed for the MMgmt below.
MMgmt(Agbus) students must complete AGBUS570, AGBUS571, AGBUS572, and AGBUS573.
MBus students must complete MNGMT581 and one of AGBUS590, AGBUS591, AGBUS592, AGBUS593 or AGBUS594. Students taking the 120 point MBus must complete at least 60 points from the papers listed for the subject, including AGBUS501. Students taking the 180 point MBus must complete at least 120 points from the papers listed for the subject, including AGBUS501.
